From Iceland — That Ain't Fog!

That Ain’t Fog!

Published June 4, 2010

Those of you living in Reykjavík may have noticed it’s particularly foggy this afternoon. Sadly, this is actually volcanic ash left over from the Eyjafjallajökull eruption.
Vísir is reporting that particle levels are already well over health limits in the capital area. Where the limit of safety for dust is 50 micrograms per cubic meter, some areas are giving readings approaching 90 micrograms per cubic meter.
The elderly, small children, and people with lung conditions are advised to stay indoors if possible. If you are elderly, a small child, or have a lung condition and absolutely must go out, wear a covering for your mouth and nose.
It is expected that the ash levels will be over the health limit through the weekend. For most people, you may experience stinging eyes, shortness of breath, and feel grit on your teeth and hair, but the ash is otherwise not especially dangerous if you have no health problems.
