From Iceland — Supermarkets Should Be More Child- (and Parent-) Friendly

Supermarkets Should Be More Child- (and Parent-) Friendly

Published March 16, 2009

Spokespeople from consumer advocate and childcare groups are calling
for supermarkets to take responsibility for where items are sold. These are among the new consumer regulations that took effect 15 March.
The rules ask that candy, soda and chippage not be sold near cash registers, and that junk food in general not be within the viewing area of children. The regulations have also asked that no advertisements for junk food appear on television during hours when children are most likely to be watching TV.
The regulations are the result of three years of negotiations and planning conducted between consumer right’s groups, child advocates, merchants, advertisers, and the government.
