From Iceland — Still No US Ambassador

Still No US Ambassador

Published November 3, 2009

Iceland still awaits a US ambassador to be stationed here, nearly a year since the previous one left.
US President Barack Obama had appointed Robert S. Connan to the position last spring, but he resigned from the post over the summer, before he even arrived. The previous ambassador, Carol Van Voorst, left Iceland at the beginning of 2009.
American citizens living in or visiting Iceland need not be particularly worried about this situation. The embassy is still here, and all consulary duties – such as the issuing of visas and passports – are still conducted there.
Iceland should not feel particularly slighted, however. According to RÚV, there are other countries currently lacking the presence of a US ambassador. These include Azerbaijan, Belarus, Portugal and Singapore.
