Sports Officials Warn Against Photos Of Body Builders

The chairman of the drug supervisory branch of the National Olympic and Sports Association of Iceland has warned against publishing photos of body builders, saying that it can have a negative effect on young people.
RÚV reports that Áslaug Sigurjónsdóttir, speaking on behalf of the association, says that they have seen an increase in nutritional supplements commonly used in gyms, as well as an observable rise in the use of steroids.
Recently, body builder Markus Rühl visited Iceland, promoting nutritional supplements at a store in Reykjavík. Customers were given the chance to meet him if they bought 6,000 ISK worth of goods at the store.
Áslaug believes that the promotion this received in the media was troubling within the sports movement.
“They’re maybe some kind of role model to young men who want to make themselves bigger, but they’re maybe using shortcuts,” she said in part.
Áslaug warns athletes against the use of nutritional supplements, even those which have been approved for sale in Iceland. However, those supplements which have been ordered from abroad are cause for special concern.
