From Iceland — Social Dems Confused by Left-Green Appointment

Social Dems Confused by Left-Green Appointment

Published November 17, 2009

Social Democrats, who share the ruling coalition with the Leftist-Greens, expressed confusion that a Leftist-Green MP was voted chairman of an organization opposed to joining the European Union.
Vísir reports that Leftist-Green MP Ásmundur Einar Daðason was voted chairman of Heimssýn, a group that defines itself as “Iceland’s ‘No to EU’ movement. It’s members agree that Iceland’s interests are best served as an independent country outside the European Union.”
Social Dems, however, have long sought to get Iceland into the EU, and it is in fact the joint objective of the current government. Even with this being the case, the Leftist-Greens have long been opposed to joining the EU, and many – Daðason among them – still are.
Daðason told reporters that he has long made his position clear, having voted against applying for EU membership, for one, and that Heimssýn is a multipartisan organization.
