Slept Outside Town Hall To Save Money

Published February 7, 2012

A Bulgarian looking for work in Iceland chose an unlikely spot to camp out for the night.
Þorlákshöfn is a quiet town that seldom sees anything unusual, making it a relatively peaceful and predictable place for police to work. However, Vísir reports that police in nearby Selfoss were alerted to the scene of town council, where they were told a man was trying to sleep.
Police arriving on the scene found a man laying in a sleeping bag. After some questioning, the police discovered that the man was from Bulgaria. He told police that he had been traveling all over the southwest corner of Iceland looking for work.
The man had a valid passport and more than enough money on him to be able to sustain himself, but told police he opted to camp in front of town hall in order to save money, at least while still looking for a job.
Police presumably did not arrest the man, who was most likely directed to find some place else to sleep.
