Reported Sexual Assaults On The Rise

Published November 18, 2013

Data compiled from police statistics shows that all categories of reported sexual assault are on the rise.
RÚV reports that 575 sexual assaults were reported to police in the first nine months of September – 200 more than were reported in all of last year.
100 rapes were reported to the police in 2009. By contrast, 148 rapes were reported to police from January to September of this year.
Sexual assaults against children that were reported to police numbered 139 in 2009 before taking a sharp decline the following year. However, the numbers rose again, to where the first nine months of 2013 have seen 164 such reports filed with police.
It should be noted that reported sexual assaults almost always make it to the prosecution stage. 98.7% of prostitution charges, 92.7% of child sexual assault charges and 89.9% of rape charges are taken on by prosecutors. Inexplicably, only 34.6% of reported cases of sexual harassment make it to the prosecution stage.
