From Iceland — Seacrest Out

Seacrest Out

Published December 21, 2012

Icelanders will not get to hear broadcasts of Ryan Seacrest’s American Top 40 With Ryan Seacrest radio show due to Iceland’s unique broadcasting laws.
Seacrest is well-known in the US not only for his stint with American Idol, but also for his top 40 countdown. The Icelandic radio station Kaninn (which, ironically enough, means The Yankee) wanted to bring Seacrest’s countdown to Iceland, Vísir reports, but was denied due to legal reasons.
The Media Committee, which gave their final opinion on the matter to the station, pointed out that Icelandic broadcasts must be in Icelandic – foreign material must be either subtitled or, in the case of radio, translated on-air by an Icelandic broadcaster or DJ.
Svali Kaldalóns, the programming manager for Kaninn, submitted the idea that the broadcast have a 15-minute delay, with which Kaninn DJs could have time to explain in Icelandic what was going on and being said on the show. The Media Committee rejected this suggestion, saying the programme itself would have to be dubbed.
By this ruling, Icelandic listeners will not be able to listen to Seacrest live on their own radios. They can still, of course, visit the above-linked website to get the Seacrest they need.
