From Iceland — Reykjavík to Accept Haitian Refugees

Reykjavík to Accept Haitian Refugees

Published February 11, 2010

The city of Reykjavík will be welcoming some new residents in the near future – survivors of last month’s devastating earthquake in Haiti.
The Welfare Committee passed a resolution yesterday to that effect. Jórunn Frímannsdóttir, the chairman of the committee, wrote on Facebook that she is currently working out the legal aspects of the move.
Vísir reports that the Icelandic government has also shown a desire to bring in refugees from Haiti, and have asked the Refugee Committee to draw up recommendations on how to expedite the process.
Iceland has been active in the relief effort in Haiti, publicly and privately. The Icelandic Rescue Team lent their assistance, and the owner of a bottled water company donated thousands of liters to the area. The Icelandic pharmaceutical company Actavis has also sent more than 270 million ISK (just over 2 million USD) for relief aid in Haiti.
