914 people received Icelandic citizenship last year, according to the
National Registry, part of a trend that has been increasing since 1999.
More women than men received citizenship, with 525 women to 389 men
respectively.
Most who received citizenship came from Poland, followed by the
Phillipines, Serbia and Thailand. When looked at by country of birth,
the picture changes slightly, as far more people who sought citizenship
were born in Iceland than in years previous. Serbs and Montenegrans are
among the fastest growing group seeking citizenship in Iceland.
As an EU country, citizens of Poland have a moderately easier time
gaining citizenship. Icelandic immigrant law as a whole generally
divides immigrants into three categories: Scandinavians, EU residents,
and everyone else.
