From Iceland — Putin To Visit Iceland

Putin To Visit Iceland

Published September 26, 2013

Russian president Vladimir Putin has expressed the desire to visit Iceland next year.
Icelandic president Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson met with Putin in Salekhard, Russia today, a statement on the President’s website announced. There, the two discussed increased cooperation between their respective countries.
For his part, Putin emphasised the importance of environmental protection in the Arctic region, as well as Russia’s growing interest in Arctic sea lanes being opened by melting ice.
Putin also said he intended to visit Iceland, probably some time next year. As Icelandair intends to open flights between Keflavík and St. Petersburg, such a trip will soon be easier for other Russians and Icelanders alike.
The Icelandic president’s announcement made no mention of whether or not Ólafur brought up Pussy Riot with Putin.
