About 30 to 40 people were assembled in front of parliament last night, banging on barrels and, in some cases, throwing rocks at the windows of parliament.
Monday evening’s protests saw some 8,000 people by some counts, most of whom were voicing discontent with what they consider a lack of action on behalf of the government to do more to relieve household debt. Three policemen were injured in those protests, and damage was done to the cars of members of parliament, but there were no arrests.
Last night’s protest was considerably smaller, but both Prime Minister Jóhanna Sigurðardóttir and Minister of Finance Steingrímur J. Sigfússon have said that they take the demands of the protesters seriously, and intend to put household debt at the top of their list of priorities for the fall session of parliament.
According to police, most of the protesters had left the area by 23:00. There were no reported arrests or physical injuries, although the windows of parliament sustained some cracks. No word yet on whether or not there will be protests tonight as well.
