From Iceland — Pro-EU Group to Set Up Office

Pro-EU Group to Set Up Office

Published January 27, 2010

A group of Icelanders in favor of their country joining the European Union will have a working office on Friday.
Jón Steindór Valdimarsson, director of the Federation of Icelandic Industries, is among those in the group, numbering about 100 people. Known as Stronger Iceland – A Nation Amongst Nations, Valdimarsson told Vísir that they aim to be a grassroots organization, hoping to encourage an informed discussion on what Iceland joining the EU would mean.
Iceland applied for membership last July, and is still awaiting their application being processed. If the EU decides to accept Iceland, and there are many indicators that it will, the matter would then be put to a national referendum.
At the moment, most Icelanders are against joining the EU, primarily over concerns about the effects it would have on fishing rights, agriculture, and levels of unemployment.
