From Iceland — Possible Northern Lights Tonight!

Possible Northern Lights Tonight!

Published January 9, 2014

The Icelandic Met Office follows more than just the weather, as they are predicting Northern Lights activity for different parts of the country.
The forecast, which is valid until 4:00 tomorrow, predicts a high level of aurora activity:

Forecast is powerful magnetic storm the next 24 hours and with it much Northern lights. Cloudy in the east and becoming overcast of high clouds in the south in the evening. Fair in the northwest part, from Snæfellsnes to Skagafjörður. The best circumstance in the southwest will presumably be in Borgafjörður and also inland in the south.

It should also be pointed out that there are tabs on the top of the map indicating different degrees of cloud cover. It is recommended to make use of these tabs – light cloud cover in an area where northern lights are forecast does not necessarily mean a blocked view, thanks to the consistency of Iceland’s winds.
The Met Office is also good enough to remind people that “[e]ven grade 2 (low activity) can be beautiful and grade 3 (moderate) can be dazzling”.
