According to the National Registry, the population of Iceland has
increased from 315,459 last year to 319,368 as of 1 January 2009.
Some of the other details from the recent census include:
-The population has increased in all areas of the country, with the southwest outside of the capital area showing the greatest increase, at 4.3%
-63% of the country – or 201,251 people – now live in the greater Reykjavík area.
-The number of municipalities has decreased from 163 in 1998 to 78 in 2009. A part of this is due to some municipalities combining a few years back.
