From Iceland — Playschool Closed Due To Abuse Investigation

Playschool Closed Due To Abuse Investigation

Published August 21, 2013

A downtown playschool has been temporarily closed while authorities look into allegations of child abuse that a former employee said happened there.
Vísir reports that a former employee of the 101 Playschool, who was working there only for the summer, has alleged that other employees at the playschool physically abused the children there, some of them as young as 18 months old.
The former employee claims to have video footage of the abuse, including the spanking of a child. Physical punishment is strictly prohibited by Icelandic law.
Hulda Linda Stefánsdóttir, who runs the playschool, said that two employees have been put on leave pending investigations. She has denied any abuse took place at the playschool.
As a result of the nature of the allegations, the city of Reykjavík has decided to close the school while investigations continue.
