From Iceland — Pirates In City Council?

Pirates In City Council?

Published November 22, 2013

According to a new survey from the University of Iceland, the Pirate Party would have a seat on Reykjavík City Council if elections were held today.
The poll, conducted by the Social Sciences office at the University of Iceland, shows that Bright Future is still the party with the strongest level of support in the city. Meanwhile, the Progressives have a long way to go if they hope to get a seat.
If elections were held today, Bright Future would get 29.4% of the vote, or five of city council’s 15 seats. The Independence Party comes in close behind, at 26.6%, and would also win five seats.
The Social Democrats, who are currently in the ruling coalition of city council, would win 17.6% of the vote, or three seats. Surprisingly, the Pirate Party – despite its young age – has managed to edge out the Left-Greens, at 10.1% to 9%, respectively, which equates a seat for both of them.
Things do not look as optimistic for the Progressives, who came in at 2.3%. This equals no seats on city council, which is also currently the case for that party.
Municipal elections are due to be held next spring.
