From Iceland — Petition for a public referendum on Icesave

Petition for a public referendum on Icesave

Published August 31, 2009

Icelanders wanting a say in whether or not they will foot the bill for the Icesave agreement have signed an online petition addressed to Iceland’s President Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson, urging him to veto the bill that was passed in parliament on Friday. The petition organized on kjosa.is has collected 9,397 electronic signatures at the time of writing and will be formally presented to the president by website representatives at 3pm today.
The petition is not an argument for or against the current wording of the Icesave bill or the changes that Alþingi has made to it, rather it is a request for public input via referendum on a bill that holds the public financially responsible for repaying debts to the United Kingdom and the Netherlands that they had not personally incurred. Hjörtur Hjartarson of kjosa.is said “State guarantee because of the agreements can disturb the life of the nation extensively in many years to come while rejecting the responsibility can also have severe consequences.”
