Waste management company Sorpa advises Icelanders that much of their wrapping paper from Christmas should not be put in recycling, as much of it cannot be processed.
With Christmas come and gone, many households undoubtedly have a lot of wrapping paper to dispose of. However, RÚV reports, much of it could end up thrown into the general garbage.
Björn Hafsteinn Halldórsson, managing director of waste management company Sorpa, told reporters that red wrapping paper, or paper that is very glossy or gilded, should not be put in the blue recycling bins. This is because, he says, the plant in Sweden which recycles much of Iceland’s material cannot process such paper.
Other types of wrapping paper are acceptable for recycling, he told reporters. For those who are having a hard time dealing with all their leftover wrapping paper, Björn reminds people that there are public dumpster sites around town, and that Sorpa is open again at various locations around the capital area.
