From Iceland — New Poll Shows Incumbent President In Lead

New Poll Shows Incumbent President In Lead

Published May 25, 2012

A new poll, this time conducted by Fréttablaðið, shows the incumbent president Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson with a considerable lead over his most viable opponent, Þóra Arnórsdóttir – a reversal of University of Iceland poll results the week previous.
Fréttablaðið called 800 people, 80% of whom responded, RÚV reports. Of those, 54% said they would vote for Ólafur if elections were held today. Only 35% said the same for Þóra.
When the newspaper conducted the same poll the month previous, the two candidates were neck-in-neck at 46% each. The percentage of undecided voters decreased in this time as well, from 20% to 14%.
Only last week, however, a poll conducted by the University of Iceland’s Social Sciences Department contacted over 1,000 people over a period of ten days, and found that 46.2% intended to vote for Þóra, while 37.8% intended to vote for Ólafur.
With presidential elections just weeks away, and polls showing wavering results that nonetheless hover near the middle, this presidential election may be one of the more heated ones in Icelandic history.
