New Poll: Most Want Haarde Trial To Continue

Published January 19, 2012

The majority of readers of the magazine DV believe that the trial of former prime minister Geir H. Haarde should continue.
As reported, the Independence Party submitted a proposal late last year calling for the trial of Geir – wherein he is charged with mismanagement and neglect during his time in office, contributing to Iceland’s 2008 economic crash – to be cancelled.
Support for the measure has come from some surprising sources, among them members of the Social Democrats and, most recently, from Minister of the Interior Ögmundur Jónasson.
DV conducted a reader’s poll on the matter, asking readers if they wanted to see parliament withdraw charges against Geir. Of those who responded, 61.1% said No and 36.9% said Yes, with the remainder either undecided or not responding.
A final vote on the resolution is still pending, but support and opposition appear to be maintaining a precarious balance.
