From Iceland — New Political Party to Run This Election Season

New Political Party to Run This Election Season

Published March 3, 2009

A new political party, L-listinn (The L List), intends to run for seats in the parliamentary elections on 25 April.
The party is a grassroots organization that means to focus on “increasing democracy and doing away with party politics” in Iceland, Morgunblaðið reports. Among its candidates is former Progressive Party MP Bjarni Harðarson.
“We have no money and no support from the state” reads a statement from the group, in part. “We have no large companies behind us and so no corporate support. But people are streaming in.” Their Facebook group claims already about 2,000 members.
The party does not claim to have any platform, right or left, except for direct democracy and a rejection of joining the EU.
