Landsvirkjun, the national power company, is hoping that Iceland will in the next few years host servers for 1% of Europe’s internet.
Numerous people in the tech industry in Iceland have brought up the country’s geothermal energy as a draw for creating “green” server farms. Running on relatively clean energy in a cool climate, Iceland is in many ways ideal for housing servers. Iceland’s midway location between North America and Europe could also be seen as advantageous to site owners on either continent.
Vísir reports that server housing giants Verne Global will begin their Icelandic operations in the beginning of February.
Landsvirkjun believes that Iceland could become among the top ten server housing areas in the world by 2020, if development trends continue as they are. This would entail hosting of 1% of Europe’s websites.
Katrín Júlíusdóttir told reporters that she is very optimistic on the matter, saying that in addition to its draw for foreign investors, it could also create a greater variety of available jobs for locals.
