Municipal Elections Website Online – Know Your Rights!

Published March 31, 2010

Whether you’re an Icelandic citizen or just a resident, you should familiarize yourself with Ministry of Justice’s new municipal elections information page – available in both Icelandic, English and many other languages.
The English page, located here, gives voting requirements based on your citizenship and the length of time you’ve been living in Iceland. Did you know, for example, that if you’re a fellow Scandinavian, you need only have been living in Iceland for three years and have legal residence in the municipality where elections are being held in order to vote? If you’re from anywhere else in the world – doesn’t matter where – you only need to live here 5 years to vote in city elections.
As you can see by checking out the lefthand margin of the website, general information is available in numerous other languages, including Polish, Vietnamese, Thai, French and German.
Democracy’s a privelege. Most people in the world don’t get to enjoy it. Don’t take it for granted. Check out the site, get informed, and don’t forget to vote on 29 May!
