Most Want Current Mayor to Stay On

Published May 4, 2010

Most Reykjavík residents want current mayor Hanna Birna Kristjánsdóttir to remain mayor, but her support is dropping, while support for Dagur Eggertsson and Jón Gnarr increases.
According to a poll conducted by television station Stöð 2 and the newspaper Fréttablaðið, 36.6% want to see Kristjánsdóttir remain mayor after city elections on 29 May. This is down from 48% in the previous poll.
At the same time, support for Eggertsson has increased by 5%, taking him up to 31%, and support for Jón Gnarr – a humorist who started his own party, the Best Party, as an admittedly satirical political party – went up 7% to 25.7% today.
Support for Sóley Tómasdóttir, who leads the list of Leftist-Green candidates, is at 4.2%, while only 1.8% said they wanted to see Progressive Einar Skúlason as the next mayor.
Looked at by gender, while Kristjánsdóttir enjoys equal amounts of support from men and women, Eggertsson appears to have the support of more women than men – 37% of women and 26% of men want to see him as the next mayor. The result was the opposite for Gnarr, where 32% of men and 17% of women support him.
The mayoral race has been getting more intense as of late, as The Best Party and the Social Democrats – where Eggertsson hails from – increase in support, along with the Leftist-Greens, while current power-holders in the Independence Party have seen their support slowly drop.
