A recent poll shows most Icelanders in support of the current PM
Jóhanna Sigurðardóttir, with the desire that she continue to serve in
this capacity.
According to the survey, conducted by the newspaper Fréttablaðið, 52.6% of respondents said they want to see Sigurðardóttir carry on as Prime Minister. 25.8% said they’d like to see Conservative chairman Bjarni Benediktson as PM, and 11.5% supported Leftist-Green chairman Steingrímur J. Sigfússon for that office.
Interestingly, 48% of Leftist-Green supporters want Sigurðardóttir to continue as PM, while a slightly smaller percentage – 46.1% – would like to see their own chairman as Prime Minister. Otherwise, supporters of a particular party consistently chose their own party’s chairman as the person they’d most want to see as PM.
Among those who chose not to reveal party affiliation or had none, 63.9% want to see Sigurðardóttir continue as PM, 9.6% want Sigfússon, 7.2% chose Progressive chairman Sigmundur Davíð Gunnlaugsson, and 6% went with Benediktson.
