A new poll from Market and Media Research (MMR) shows that most Icelanders agreed that the government officials who attended the Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia were right to do so.
Vísir reports that 55.1% felt President Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson was right to attend. 54.1% said the same about Minister of Education and Cultural Affairs Illugi Gunnarsson (seen above).
Support for the attendance divided along party lines. Those supporting the ruling coalition of the Progressives and the Independence Party (from which Illugi hails) showed the greatest support for Olympics attendance, whilst those who support the opposition – the Social Democrats, Left-Greens, Bright Future and the Pirates – were against attending.
More men than women supported the decision as well. 59.8% of men and 49.2% of women believed the president was right to attend, whilst 58.9% of men and 48% of women said the same of Illugi.
