From Iceland — Mosque To Be Built In Sogamýri

Mosque To Be Built In Sogamýri

Published July 7, 2013

In keeping a long-standing promise to the Muslim community in Iceland, a plot of land will be granted in Sogamýri for the construction of a mosque.
Páll Hjaltason, chairman of Reykjavík’s Environment and Planning Committee, expects the Muslim Association to build a mosque in Sogamýri once all the proper applications are complete, RÚV reports. The development plan for the area has already been approved by city council, so everything will be set in motion once all the paperwork is submitted.
The mosque will feature a 9-metre tall minaret, though the exact design will be decided upon in collaboration with the municipality and the Association of Icelandic Architects. In addition to a large prayer hall, the 800 square metre building will also feature a community centre and library.
The plot at the end of the old Suðurlandsbraut will make the mosque a prominent landmark in the city. Construction is set to begin next year.
