From Iceland — Minister of Education Looks Into School Cuts

Minister of Education Looks Into School Cuts

Published November 25, 2009

Minister of Education Katrín Jakobsdóttir has asked municipalities to further explain the reasoning behind cutting teaching hours in order to save money.
While primary schools are under the jurisdiction of municipalities, the minister is still of course responsible for how these schools are run. The Association of Icelandic Municipalities has proposed cutting the legal teaching hours requirement in the hopes of freeing up money in their budgets.
The minister, who would not comment to Vísir with regards to how likely she was to submit the idea to parliament, told the Association of Icelandic Municipalities that she wanted more information on just how much they expected to save and what professional impact making these cuts would have.
