From Iceland — Metal Detectors Coming To Parliament

Metal Detectors Coming To Parliament

Published December 23, 2013

Soon Iceland’s parliament will have a new addition to its security team: a metal detector.
Parliamentary security guards are not armed, although security cameras are prevalent in the building and an alarm system is in place. However, shortly before last Christmas, a man visiting parliament attempted to seriously injure himself in the building’s restroom. This prompted the security team to take extra measures.
Vísir reports that a metal detector will be set up at parliament’s entrance, some time shortly after the new year. Helgi Bernódusson, the parliamentary office manager, told reporters that the device will not be required use for MPs or parliamentary employees – only guests will have to use the metal detector.
“We’re taking similar measures to those taken by parliaments all around us,” he said. “So people won’t be able to come in here with metal objects without it being possible to have a look at it.”
