From Iceland — Meatless Meat Pie Company Changes Name

Meatless Meat Pie Company Changes Name

Published January 3, 2014

The company that was revealed earlier this year to be selling “meat pies” which did not actually contain any meat has changed its name.
Skessuhorn reports that the food company formerly known as Gæðakokkar ehf. (“Quality Chefs”) is now known as Kræsingar ehf. (“Delicacies”). The company focuses in particular on institutional kitchens, but also does catering.
The small, west Iceland company gained media attention earlier this year when, in the wake of the horse meat scandal that swept through Europe, The Icelandic Food and Veterinary Authority (MAST) tested food products from numerous domestic companies.
In the course of the tests, it came to light that Gæðakokkar’s “beef pies” – labeled as containing 30% beef – actually contained no beef at all. Meatballs purported to contain lamb and beef also turned out to contain now beef.
MAST called for the products to be recalled, and Gæðakokkar settled the case by paying fines for mislabeling their products.
