From Iceland — MP For The Movement Proposes Vote Of No Confidence [UPDATE]

MP For The Movement Proposes Vote Of No Confidence [UPDATE]

Published February 21, 2013

Þór Saari, an MP for The Movement, proposed a vote of no confidence yesterday against the ruling coalition government of the Social Democratic Alliance and the Left-Green Movement.
Citing the government’s inability to successfully steer the constitutional bill through parliament, Þór is calling for the government to be suspended as he believes the government is not abiding by the will of the people, who voted in favour of a new constitution in a nation-wide referendum last October.
Parliament will cast ballots on the vote of no confidence in the government, with RÚV reporting [http://www.ruv.is/frett/fimm-thingmenn-rada-framtid-stjornarinnar] that the likely outcome will be 28 votes supporting the motion, 30 votes against, 1 MP will abstain, and the likely decisions of 4 MP’s still up in the air. The mystery MP’s are former members of the Left-Greens, and an MP who had been voted into Parliament in another party but is now a member of the new Solidarity party.
UPDATE: Just before 10 AM Þór Saari retracted his proposal for parliament to conduct a vote of no confidence in the ruling coalition government. The vote was going to be fast-tracked to be held today, but Þór had expected it to take a couple of days from the time his proposal was submitted, so rather than speed up the process he withdrew his proposal entirely. He did reiterate, however, that he is displeased with the slow pace at which government is processing the constitutional bill.
