From Iceland — Loses City Council, Wins Mayoral Seat

Loses City Council, Wins Mayoral Seat

Published June 8, 2010

Lúðvík Geirsson now bears the distinction of having lost his seat on Hafnarfjörður town council after the elections, but winning back his mayoral seat thanks to an agreement between Social Democrats and Leftist-Greens.
After the 29 May municipal elections, the results in Hafnarfjörður showed the Independence Party make gains on the Social Democrats, winning two additional seats. As it is now, the conservatives have five seats, the Social Democrats have five seats, and the Leftist-Greens have one seat.
Mayor Lúðvík Geirsson was number six on the Social Democrats’ list of candidates, and so by all intents and purposes lost his seat on city council, let alone his mayoral office.
However, after negotiations between the Leftist-Greens and the Social Democrats on the formation of a new majority, Lúðvík will come back as mayor of the town until June 2012, and which point Leftist-Green councilperson Guðrún Ágústa Guðmundsdóttir will take up the position.
The next municipal elections will be held in 2014.
