From Iceland — Local Celeb Less Than Pleased With Grapevine

Local Celeb Less Than Pleased With Grapevine

A media personality has written an open letter to the Grapevine that expresses dissatisfaction with a recent opinion piece printed in our current issue.
The article in question, A Foreigner’s Guide To The Confusing World Of Icelandic Celebrities, has inspired reactions of both praise and condemnation. Among those who took issue with the article was Þorbjörg Marínósdóttir, better known as Tobba Marínós, who accused the Grapevine of “bullying”.
In the Grapevine piece, author Ragnar Egilsson says of Tobba in part, “Tobba is a dating advice blogger and gossip scribbler who thrust her way into the limelight sometime last year. … As the female version of Gillz, you would think she would try to counteract his bare-assed misogyny, but instead she gangs up with Gillz in a pincer movement on sanity—a kind of lobotomized Robin to his Down’s syndrome Batman.”
In a letter she wrote to the Grapevine, but sent to Vísir, she responds in part, “If I had let myself degrade others and write such filth about another person during my time at [gossip magazine] Séð og Heyrt, my editor would have hit me in the face with an electric mixer.”
Þorbjörg calls upon people to embrace diversity, and do what they want to do so long as they aren’t hurting anyone else.
She then closes with, “This type of work reminds one of certain foreign media outlets. Icelandic media has thankfully been devoid of such work up until now – do they lose their morality somewhat under the circumstances?”.
