Leftist-Greens and Conservatives Poll Highest

Published February 12, 2010

According to a poll conducted by the magazine Frjáls Verslun, the Independence Party and the Leftist-Greens are the two largest parties in the country.
Among those surveyed, 35% said they support the conservative Independence Party, who were driven from power among popular protests just one year ago. 26% said they support the Leftist-Greens, 22% support the Social Democrats, and 15% support the Progressives. The remaining 2% was shared by the Liberals, the Movement, the Civic Movement, and The Best Party, a parody party created by writer and humorist Jón Gnarr.
Translated into who would get how many of parliament’s 63 seats, the Independence Party would have 22 to 23 seats and the Leftist-Greens would have 16 to 17, making them the only two parties to grow significantly in popularity, as they have 16 and 14 seats now, respectively.
The Progressives would gain a seat if elections were held today, going from nine seats to ten. All other parties have lost support to some extent – the Social Democrats would go from 20 seats to 14, and the Movement would go from 4 to zero.
