PM: Left-Greens Shouldn’t Argue in Public

Published May 26, 2010

Prime Minister Jóhanna Sigurðardóttir told reporters that she feels it’s a shame that MPs for the Leftist-Green party argue with each other pubilcly.
Earlier this week, Leftist-Green MP Lilja Mósesdóttir, speaking to RÚV about Magma Energy’s purchase of a majority stake in HS Orka, said that she knew many people who have left the party altogether over the matter. She contended that party chairman Steingrímur J. Sigfússon has been encouraged last fall to keep control of HS Orka in domestic hands, and that he in turn promised to do so.
Steingrímur replied that neither he nor anyone else close to him recalls such a promise being made. Another Leftist-Green MP, Árni Þór Sigurðsson, responded to Lilja that actually Leftist-Green ministers had tried to bring HS Orka under public ownership last autumn, but that Social Democrats had blocked the idea.
Prime Minister Jóhanna Sigurðardóttir, commenting on the argument, said she felt it a shame that party colleagues would argue like this in public. Naturally people have disagreements, she contended, but the coalition parties need to show a united front to the nation.
