From Iceland — Leftist-Greens Expected to Hold

Leftist-Greens Expected to Hold

Published October 7, 2009

The Leftist-Green Party is expected to meet tonight, with their chairman, Finance Minister Steingrímur J. Sigfússon, back from an annual meeting of the International Monetary Fund, and Vísir reports that the party is not expected to split.
Speaking with Fréttablaðið, Minister of Education Katrín Jakobsdóttir said, “I reckon that we’ll go over the situation and I don’t expect anything other than everybody will be reconciliatory.” At the same time, she expected that the meeting will be extensive, with many party members anxious to speak their minds.
A previous meeting had been canceled, shortly after Leftist-Green MP Ögmundur Jónasson resigned from his position as Minister of Health, citing disagreements over how to handle the Icesave matter. Tensions within the party over Icesave have been creating some occasionally heated disagreements, but sources close to Vísir report that every Leftist-Green MP is an agreement to continue supporting the ruling coalition.
