From Iceland — Left-Green MP Questions Prime Minister’s Promises

Left-Green MP Questions Prime Minister’s Promises

Published June 16, 2013

An MP for the Left-Green Movement, Svandis Svavaarsdottir, has questioned whether the Progressive Party had gone too far in its election promises to write down the mortgages of Icelandic homeowners.
As the Grapevine previously reported, Prime Minister Sigmundur Davíð Gunnlaugsson has outlined a 10-step action plan toward fulfilling his election promise to alleviate some of the burden for mortgage holders. The first step he outlined for Parliament on Tuesday was to set up a special committee to examine various ways of actually achieving his promise to reduce the principal of mortgages.
As RÚV reports, the Prime Minster did not appoint committees to examine the economic soundness of other decisions he has made, such as reducing the taxes on fishing quota barons, or maintaining the lower VAT level for accommodation in the country.
