Despite about 12,000 people being on the unemployment roles, only ten people sought two jobs advertised at KFC.
According to the Directorate of Labour, there are about 12,000 unemployed people in Iceland. Of them, 3,800 are under the age of 30, and most of them have at least finished secondary school. A few hundred of them are with university degrees.
Recently, KFC placed an ad for a shift manager aged 24 or older, and another general employee to work in the dining room, aged at least 18. The response has been decidedly underwhelming.
Only ten people showed up for the available positions, among them five Icelanders, and only one of them was over 20.
Barbara Kristín Kristjánsdóttir, the staff manager at KFC, told Vísir that she found the situation “tragic”. When asked why she has not gone directly to the Directorate of Labour to seek employees, she replied, “I have found, when I search through them, that you are forcing people to come and work for you, and then we get people of varying levels of interest in the job.”
