Last Thursday, RÚV
showed video footage shot by Hjörtur Kjerúlf at Jökulsá river, which flows into Lagarfljót, showing what appears to be an object moving in a snake-like motion across the current. Legends of the Worm of Lagarfljót have existed since 14th century, but this was the first time such clear evidence for its existence has been shown.
The video appears to have gained considerable traction elsewhere in the world, as a blurb on Yahoo Japan
has reportedly brought a great deal of traffic to RÚV for the video alone. In fact, over 300,000 Japanese guests visited the video's webpage, RÚV
RÚV attributes the popularity of the video to national character, saying "as many know, the Japanese are greatly interested in monsters and other strange beings."
A video showing what is purportedly the mythical Worm of Lagarfljót has apparently been a popular subject in the Japanese corner of the internet.
