From Iceland — Já to babies, nei to weddings

Já to babies, nei to weddings

Published August 12, 2009

If you’ve been noticing an unusually large number of swelled abdomens and designer baby carriages on the streets of this fair city you deserve a pat on the back for your astute observational abilities. Icelanders have birthed 3.5 percent more babies than usual in Landspítali so far this year, compared to the first eight months of 2008. A total of 2,101 babies have been registered thus far, with many more due in the coming months so this could turn out to be a record-breaking year.
While there has been a notable increase in procreation there has been a drop in amalgamation, with fewer weddings taking place this summer than ever before. Rev. Vigfús Thór Árnason of Grafarvogskirkja told Morgunbladid that he has been performing one or two weddings each Saturday this summer, in comparison to the four or five performed every Saturday in the summer of 2008. This drop he attributes to the financial hardships that many couples have fallen upon not being conducive to planning as extravagant a wedding as has become the norm in recent years.
