From Iceland — It's Over

It’s Over

Published May 25, 2010

Everyone’s favorite ash-belching machine appears to have reached a conclusion.

A cessation of volcanic activity was first given greater attention when famed journalist and personality Ómar Ragnarsson flew a plane over the volcano last week, returning to say that there was no more ash coming out of the Eyjafjallajökull volcano. Nonetheless, police in the area were still cautious, blocking traffic and other access to the area, which they continued to call a hazardous area.

However, it now appears as though the eruption has finally ceased for now. The people in the region are furthermore reporting no ash in the air – just the kind of blue skies and warm weather we’ve been enjoying here in the capital all weekend long now.

Livestock have been especially pleased, Vísir reports. Heiða Björg Scheving, a farmer from Hvassafell, told reporters that the cows had been very happy to be finally let out of their barns to enjoy the fresh air and sunshine.

On a more scientific note, seismic activity in and around the volcano has also appeared to have ceased. There were some tremors around Þórsmörk, but they ended some time last night.

An official declaration of the volcano’s conclusion is still pending, though, so keep your fingers crossed.
