From Iceland — Investigative Committee Report Comes Out Today

Investigative Committee Report Comes Out Today

Published April 12, 2010

The report of the Parliamentary Investigative Committee on the causes of the economic collapse goes public today.
The 8,000 page report will be introduced at a press conference at the restaurant and theatre Iðnó at 10:30. There, members of the committee will introduce the basic conclusions of their findings. The press conference will be broadcast live on visir.is.
The report will also be available for viewing on parliament’s website. Sources close to the Grapevine have told us that Chapter 2 and Chapter 21 should be especially interesting. Grapevine will link to the report as soon as it appears.
Keep in mind that it will be in Icelandic – when or if an English version is released remains to be seen.
The report has been a long time coming. Originally scheduled for release last fall, it had to be delayed until last February, where it was again delayed. Several former and current politicians are expected to be mentioned in the report, as well as many captains of industry. The committee’s findings may result in criminal charges against those found to have broken the law for the sake of their own wealth, to the detriment of this country’s economy.
The Grapevine holds out hope that this won’t mean one or two scapegoats are publicly shamed in a bread and circuses display, but that the people actually responsible for bankrupting this country are brought before a judge and sentenced appropriately.
