From Iceland — Immigrants Graduate from Icelandic Class

Immigrants Graduate from Icelandic Class

Published May 25, 2009

Thirty-five unemployed immigrants graduated last Friday from Icelandic classes offered by the Equality Centre.
Akranes town councilperson Helga Gunnarsdóttir handed out diplomas to the graduating class, most of the Polish, for their completion of the language classes which the Equality Centre coordinated. A statement from the group emphasized that the classes are designed to strengthen the students’ skills in the use of Icelandic in daily life; in the sort of situations that the average person living here would run into on a day-to-day basis.
Amal Tamimi, the director of the Equality Centre, thanked those who participated, and told reporters that the program went very well. The classes were offered with the help of the Directorate of Labour, the Red Cross, and the municipality of Akranes.
The Equality Centre was created to assist foreigners in learning Icelandic, but also to learn about Icelandic society and culture, and to assist an immigrant’s integration process in any way possible.
