Icelandic Security Firm to Protect Cargo Ships Near Somalia

Published March 29, 2010

An Icelandic security firm has taken up the task of guarding cargo vessels sailing near the coast of Somalia, a region known to be rife with pirates (shown above).
The firm, known as Terr Security ehf., will very soon send about 20 Icelanders to the region to begin their work. The employees have been trained in the use of firearms, Eyjan reports, and the pay attracts many to this dangerous job.
Terr has worked mostly in training doormen for numerous clubs in Iceland, but more recently turned to training bodyguards after the banking collapse. Today, their services are sought by clients all over the world.
Stefán Stefánsson, the owner of Terr, told Eyjan that the group on its way to Africa will help guard several cargo vessels who intend to sail close to the Somalian coast. He adds that the high salary attracts people to become employees, and the favorable exchange rate attracts foreign clients.
Piracy along the coast of Somalia has attracted international attention, as ships are regularly commandeered, taken to shore, and then held for ransom. It is arguably the only lucrative industry in the region.
