From Iceland — Icelanders Slow To Complete University

Icelanders Slow To Complete University

Published April 2, 2012

In comparison to other nations within the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), Icelanders take considerably longer than average to finish their university degrees.
According to data compiled by Statistics Iceland, only 44% of university students in Iceland who started in 2003 completed their courses at the right time. Only students in Luxembourg were slower to finish university, with 41% of those completing their coursework on time. Icelandic students are also, on average, older than other OECD university students when they complete their coursework.
Two years ago, however, 71% of students in Luxembourg graduated university on time, compared to 58% of Icelanders.
This trend is reflected in the OECD average overall: two years ago, 81% of university students within the OECD completed their studies without delay; today, the average is 68%.
Of all OECD peoples, Americans were the most likely to complete their university education on time.
