Iceland is ready to make a comeback in the international world of bridge, where they were once world champions.
Vísir spoke with chairman of the Bridge Association chairman Jafet S. Ólafsson, who pointed out that Iceland hasn’t been the bridge world champion since 1991, when the country won the Bermuda Bowl.
Jafet said that bridge is the one group sport where Iceland has managed to be world champions, and bridge was made an Olympic event seven years ago.
Einar Jónsson, the coach for the Icelandic national team, has chosen four pairs to comprise the country’s team this year. Among those chosen were three of the Icelanders who won Iceland the world championship title in 1991. The Bermuda Bowl will be taking place in Holland this October.
Jafet told Vísir that Iceland’s prowess at bridge is known the world over, claiming that the one thing American tycoon Warren Buffet knows about Iceland is that the country has good bridge players. Jafet said that Buffet sometimes even plays Icelanders at bridge online, as does Microsoft founder Bill Gates. Jafet hopes to get both Buffet and Gates to visit Iceland next January.
