Icelander Killed In Tulsa

Published September 10, 2012

An 18-year-old Icelandic boy was shot and killed during an argument in the parking lot of a convenience store in Tulsa, Oklahoma early Saturday morning.
Local news reports that the incident occurred in the parking lot of a QuickTrip convenience store some time after one in the morning on Saturday. Police were called to the scene shortly before 1:30.
At the scene, police discovered 37-year-old John White and 18-year-old Kristján Hinrik Þórsson in their car. Both had been shot multiple times. They were rushed to the hospital, where Hinrik – as he was known to friends and family – was pronounced dead. White remains in critical condition.
Police said that the two were parked in their car when a man approached them, claiming they had almost hit him with their car. An argument ensued, at which point the suspect pulled out a gun and shot into the car multiple times before fleeing on foot. The suspect is still at large.
Vísir reports that Hinrik’s friends learned of the news while they were at a birthday party. A friend of Hinrik’s, Ólafur Gunnar Daníelsson, told reporters, “Naturally, we broke down. We just sat there, out of our minds and feeling horrible. We were just so unbelievably angry and felt this was so unfair.”
Ólafur Gunnar, another friend of Hinrik’s, described him as “always happy, incredibly funny, and very special”. He added that when he last spoke to Hinrik, he had expressed the desire to return to Iceland soon.
The Grapevine extends its deepest sympathies to the friends and family of Hinrik.
