Published February 9, 2010

Iceland tops the list of the world’s most environmentallly friendly countries, according to a joint study from Columbia and Yale universities.
The New York Times reports that the Environmental Performance Index – which is conducted every two years – put Iceland in the top slot. Following close behind are Switzerland, Costa Rica and Sweden.
The full data on Iceland’s ranking, which can be read here, puts great emphasis on the fact that almost all of Iceland’s energy comes from renewable sources – geothermal and hydropower.
At the same time, the US and China fell further down the list. China went from 105th place two years previous to 121st place today, while the US dropped from 39th to 61st.
The full list of countries on the Environmental Performance Index can be found here. To see how an individual country ranks more specifically in environmental matters, simply click on the name of the country.
