From Iceland — Iceland Could Become One Single Voting District

Iceland Could Become One Single Voting District

Published March 17, 2010

A bill has been submitted to parliament that, if passed, would combine all voting districts in the country into one.
The language of the bill argues that the ballot of each person in the country deserves to be treated equally. Up until now, ballots submitted from those living in the country carry more influence than those cast by those living in the capital area. This was originally done to balance rural and metropolitan interests.
In total, 19 MPs from every party except the Independence Party intend to argue their support for the bill. The news website Eyjan was not able to find out why the Independence Party does not support the bill at this time – MPs from every party were sent announcements of the bill, asking for support.
While the bill argues that this is a question of human rights, it should be noted that such a bill, if made law, would require changing the constitution. The bill’s authors state that the changes needed to combine all voting districts would and should take time to implement.
